A woman jumped into the polar bear cage at the Berlin Zoo Friday morning and survived an attack by one of the bears.

Zookeepers were feeding the animals, one of which bit the intruder on her arms and legs, but zoo staff managed to stave off the bear. The woman is recovering at the Virchow hospital in Berlin, a Russian news service, Novosti reported.

An American in Germany afflicted with leukemia and AIDS has been cured of the immune system disease after receiving a bone marrow transplant meant to cure his blood disease, his doctor claimed Thursday.

Hematologist Gero Huetter, 39, only identified the patient as a 42-year-old man living in Berlin and being treated at the city's Charité Medical University. The man has been suffering from AIDS for more than 10 years and also has leukemia.

Researchers have debunked the myth that some people are born optimists, finding that even normally optimistic people become sad when they lose their jobs during a financial downturn.

"This research addresses the age-old question: how much of our well-being is determined by issues within ourselves and how much by factors outside ourselves?" article co-author Ulrich Schimmack, an assistant professor in psychology at the University of Toronto's Mississauga campus, said in a statement. "Contrary to popular belief, we found that certain life circumstances - like unemployment - can have a significant effect on a person's sense of well-being, whether they're generally an optimist or not."

Tourist Left Behind On Fiji Dive Trip Swims 12 Hours For Land

A tourist left behind on a dive trip swam all night, covering nearly 10 kilometers through shark-infested water before reaching land in Taveuni, Fiji Monday.

Thomas Holz, 40, of Berlin, Germany, was out a scuba diving trip with three other tourists at Rainbow Reef, near Viani Bay in Vanua Levu, according to the local Fiji Times newspaper.
