A First: Spending For Cellphones Among Americans Eclipses Landlines
As the budget tightens for many U.S. households, more Americans are dropping the landline in favor of cellphones. The proof of this is a report from the Bureau of Labor which said that in 2007, for the first time, spending for mobile units exceeded that for landlines. According to data from the bureau, 55 percent of all consumer telephone expenditures two years ago were for mobile phone, and landlines got a 43 percent share. A measly 2 percent went to phone cards and pagers.
U.S., Russian Communications Satellites Collide
A U.S. mobile communications satellite has collided with a non-operational Russian communications relay station creating a cloud of orbiting debris, according to the U.S. space agency NASA. One of nearly 100 satellites that support Iridium Satellite LLC's satellite telephone operation collided Tuesday with the Cosmos 2251 491 miles above northern Siberia, said Nicholas Johnson, NASA's chief scientist for orbital debris at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, according to CBS News. The cause of the collision, the first by two big objects, was unknown, according to Johnson.
Monster.com Hacked For Third Time
Data of millions of users of Monster.com, including 4.5 million in the United Kingdom, have been stolen as the online job recruitment site said hackers have breached its database. Monster senior vice president Patrick Manzo on Thursday confirmed in a statement that the site was hacked one week ago. Manzo said that except for CVs, user names, passwords, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses, alongside demographic data, birth dates, gender and ethnicity were stolen.
Greetings Cards By The Late Princess Diana Sold For $3,800 At Auction
Greetings cards written by Britain's late Princess Diana have sold for $3,800. The two cards - which belonged to former royal chef Mervyn Wycherley who worked for the royal family for 23 years - were expecting to fetch around $1,500 but a bidding war broke out when they went on sale at auction house Reeman Dansie in Colchester, Essex on Monday. Auctioneer James Grinter said: "It's a very buoyant market, it has not been affected at all by the credit crunch. People would rather invest their money into something they can keep in their home and enjoy and which will hopefully rise in value."
Liger Critically Injures Oklahoma Zoo Worker
A worker at an Oklahoma zoo was seriously injured after a liger, a cross between a lion and a tiger, attacked him Wednesday while feeding the animal. Peter Getz of Safari's Interactive Animal Sanctuary in Broken Arrow was taken to the St. John Medical Center in Tulsa and remains in critical condition for injuries in the neck and chest, according to authorities.
