The nation won't soon forget the Wal-Mart employee in Long Island, N.Y. who was trampled to death trying to hold back thousands of angry holiday shoppers bursting through sliding glass doors anxious to get their hands on discounted merchandise the day after Thanksgiving. And for the next few weeks, people in Palm Desert, Calif. will likely discuss the two men who shot and killed each other in the aisles of Toys "R" Us, seemingly to settle an argument their girlfriends were having. Stories like these capture the nation's attention and make headlines around the world. Commentators and newspaper editorials questioned whether greed and consumerism are trumping our values and making the holidays a particularly violent time of year.
NY High School Athlete Dies During Egg-Throwing Prank
A Harlem teenager who was throwing eggs from a New York City rooftop as part of a prank died from injuries sustained after falling six stories while trying to jump between the roofs of two buildings. David Diaz, 19, was found lying in the courtyard between the two buildings bleeding heavily. He died at the hospital.
FBI Exhibits Unabomber's Cabin, Kaczynski Complains To US Court of Appeals
Convicted "Unabomber" Ted Kaczynski has written a letter complaining to a three-judge U.S. Court of Appeals panel about the display of his 10-by-12-foot cabin as a central artifact in an exhibition at the Newseum marking the FBI centennial. The Smoking Gun article, "Kaczynski Angered By Predatory Home Loan: Unabomber raps feds for allowing cabin's display at D.C. museum," includes a three-page, handwritten letter from Kaczynski, dated July 15, that relates how Kaczynski learned about the display when he received a "full-page, full-color advertisement that features my cabin, which is being displayed publicly at something called a 'Newseum.'"
Philippine Lawyer Files Swindling Charges Against Pope, Archbishop
A Philippine lawyer filed a complaint before the Manila prosecutor's office on Tuesday accusing Pope Benedict XVI and an archbishop of swindling, teaching immoral doctrines and public disorder. According to lawyer Elly Lao Pamatong, as quoted on GMANews.tv, the Pope "has been defrauding billions of innocent members of the human race by telling mythical and deceitful stories" that "have proximately caused the herein complainant and billions of other victims to turn over one-tenth of their incomes" to the Pope, Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales "and their accomplices."
British Magazine Names Weirdest Book Title Of 2007
British magazine Bookseller recently published poll results that revealed the past year's three strangest book titles, continuing the magazine's annual trend. The award, named the Diagram Prize, for the oddest book title for 2007 was given to one titled "If You Want Closure In Your Relationship, Start With Your Legs."
