Thailand Battles Royal Insults By Tapping Technology

Thailand will spend $2.9 million to $14.6 million to build a firewall which will monitor and block Websites that insult the Royal Family.

Thai Communications Minister Mun Patanotai said the 100 to 500-million baht firewall was decided after the ministry got more than 1,000 complaints about portals that are considered offensive to the royal family. But he declined to identify the Webpages.

Thailand Opens World's Longest Aquarium Tunnel

The world's longest aquarium tunnel was opened Sunday in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand in time for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit in December.

The $17.4 million aquarium will serve as venue for the ASEAN Summit wherein heads of government in the region will gather to discuss pressing political and economic issues affecting Southeast Asia.

Shoes and water bottles rained on Thai Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat on Wednesday as he visited the Information Ministry.

The angry throwers were about 200 government employees who were critical of Somchai for his perceived closeness to former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinwatra, sentenced on Tuesday for two years because of violation of the country's corruption law. Thaksin is Somchai's brother-in-law.

Insects Will Soon Reach The Menu With Increasing Food Prices, Food Supply Shortage

A retired professor at the Tokyo University of Agriculture says that insects will become an important source of protein with rising food prices and shortage of food supply.

Prof. Jun Mihashi said as world population continues to rise, insects will become an important source of protein in the near future. ''The amount of food, including meat, will decrease. Insects with high protein and high fat should be used effectively,'' he told the Kyodo News Agency.
