Huge Cache Of Spanish Empire Beads Found Off Georgia Coast

About 70,000 glass beads from all around the world have been found on an island off Georgia. It's the largest 17th century bead repository ever found at what is believed to be one of the Spanish empire's most remote and wealth outposts.

The beads, made of French and Chinese blue glass, Dutch layered glass and Baltic amber, were discovered as part of a continuing research project at the former Mission Santa Catalina de Gaule on what is now known as St. Catherine's Island off the coast of Georgia. The site, founded in the 16th century, was the capital and administrative center for the province of Guale in Spanish Florida for almost a century, according to a statement from the American Museum of Natural History.

Robotic fish will be released in the port of Gijon in northern Spain in a three-year research project to detect pollution levels.

Each fish costs around $29,000. It is shaped like a carp and is a little over 3-feet long and can swim at a speed of around 1-yard per second, according to a press release from BMT Group Ltd., the company that builds the fish.

Archaeologists in Spain unearthed a 14th century brick over with a macabre role-to bake bones. Researchers found that animal bones were burnt in the over and mixed with other materials to produce a protective coating to strengthen medieval walls in Granada, Spain.

The study, which will appear in Analytical Chemistry, details how the scientists found these materials using a new testing method, according to a statement from the American Chemical Society.

Advertising Campaign Encourages Atheists To Come Out In The Open

British atheist campaigner and book author Richard Dawkins launched on Tuesday a $204,000 multi-media advertising campaign designed to encourage more nonbelievers to come out in the open.

The national campaign includes posters on bus sides and the tube and screen broadcasts in central London with the slogan "There's probably no God. Now stop worrying and enjoy your life." About 200 buses in London and 600 buses that travel across England, Scotland and Wales will bear the slogan Tuesday and Wednesday.
