Aides Reveal South Carolina Gov. Missing Since Thursday Was Simply "Hiking In Appalachians"
The office of South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford late Monday cleared up a mystery, and growing concerns, about the sudden disappearance of the governor since last week. After four days of questions that even Sanford's wife could not answer, aides said the Republican had been hiking on the Appalachian Trail. According to the State, Sanford left the governor's mansion last Thursday in a black Suburban SUV used by his bodyguards. His last known location was near Atlanta, where a cell site received a signal from one of his mobile phones. Since that time, his phones have been switched off.
Oops: High School Prom Hands Out Shot Glasses As Souvenirs
Students who have attended a high school prom in Pennsylvania were given commemorative shot glasses, a move that school administrators now say was a poor decision. Juniors and seniors attending Warwick High School's prom last week were given liquor glasses as a gift. Last year, the girls were given a picture frame and boys were given a money clip, the UPI reported.
U Of Tennessee Mulling Selling President's Residence To Save $180,000 Annual Operating Costs
The next president of the University of Tennessee won't be homeless, but he likely won't live in the four-story, 11,000 square foot Gregorian-style brick structure that most college presidents have occupied since 1960. With an annual operating budget of $180,000 a year, university officials think it would be cheaper to just give the next president a housing allowance and sell the waterfront house that sits on 3.4 acres.
Budget Shortfall Forces Bronx Zoo To Evict Animals, Close Exhibits
Banks, automakers, and insurance companies aren't the only ones suffering from the country's economic woes. Turns out the recession is causing hundreds of animals to be evicted from the Bronx Zoo as well. On Thursday, zoo officials-facing tightened budgets-told a New York City Council committee that they would need to send away deer, bats, foxes, antelopes and other animals to replacement zoos around the country.
Dubbed King Of Earmarks, Rep. Murtha Says 'If I'm Corrupt, It's Because I Take Care of My District'
Rep. John Murtha (D-PA), chairman of the House Appropriations Defense Subcommittee, on Monday responded to longtime criticisms about his earmarks for his district by saying, "If I'm corrupt, it's because I take care of my district." The 76-year-old Democrat directs a reported $100 million in earmarks annually his district. Murtha's earmarks are being brought to the fore once more with the closure of lobbying firm PMA Group, first reported by the New York Times, after the home of its founder Paul Magliocchetti was raided as part of a federal probe, and the 2008 Defense appropriations bill passed by Congress early March.
