U.S., Russian Communications Satellites Collide
A U.S. mobile communications satellite has collided with a non-operational Russian communications relay station creating a cloud of orbiting debris, according to the U.S. space agency NASA. One of nearly 100 satellites that support Iridium Satellite LLC's satellite telephone operation collided Tuesday with the Cosmos 2251 491 miles above northern Siberia, said Nicholas Johnson, NASA's chief scientist for orbital debris at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, according to CBS News. The cause of the collision, the first by two big objects, was unknown, according to Johnson.
Somali Pirates Release Ukrainian Vessel After Ransom Payment
Somali pirates released on Thursday a Ukrainian vessel filled with arms after a $3.2 million ransom was paid, according to reports from Somalia. The pirates captured the M/V Faina and held its crew of 21 on Sept. 25, 2008 while the ship was sailing for Kenya. They initially asked for a $20 million (14 million euro) ransom, but lowered the amount later.
Father And Son Spies Charged For Getting Espionage Payments From Russia
A former CIA agent serving time at an Oregon prison for spying for the Russians was indicted Thursday on new espionage charges together with his son. Harold James Nicholson, 58, was brought from his Sheridan prison cell to a Portland federal court in shackles as was his son Nathan, 24, to face charges of collecting and receiving payments from the Russian Federation for classified information passed by the convicted spy to Moscow in the 1990s.
Thanksgiving Feast 220 Miles Above Aboard ISS
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station are celebrating the Thanksgiving celebration feasting on freeze-dried green beans and cornbread dressing. Completing the commemoration is turkey, albeit in more of a deli style.
