Tax authorities in Germany are after a Romanian student to collect a 50 percent share and value-added tax from the $13,827 she earned from selling her virginity online.
Alina Percea, 18, a computer studies student in Mannheim, was paid the amount by a middle-aged Italian businessman in exchange for a weekend of sex at a luxury Venetian hotel. Her student visa allows her to work locally, including as a prostitute, for 90 days.
However, earnings from prostitution, which is legal in Germany, are heavily taxed at a rate of 50 percent of the sold service. Such earning is also subject to a 19 percent VAT, which Percea should have passed on to her customer.
"Prostitution is not an illegal act in Germany, but not paying tax on earned money is," an unnamed tax official in Berlin was quoted as saying Thursday by Telegraph.co.uk.
German inland revenue investigators will calculate the exact amount of tax assessment on Percea's earnings based on hard figures they will get.
