If at First You Don't Succeed...Cheat

April 5, 2005
New York (AHN)- A Bronx teacher allegedly paid a former homeless man $2 dollars to take and pass his state exam. Rubin Leitner, 58, who suffers from Asperger's syndrome, did so well on the test that authorities became suspicious. According to local authorities Wayne Brightly, 38, allegedly coerced Leitner to get a fake state identification card that showed Leitner's photo with Brightly's name. He then used the ID, to obtain a school ID card to use on test day. The two men met in the late 1980's as students at Brooklyn College, after a chance meeting in the alumni office Leitner began to tutor the teacher. While Leitner and Brightly are old acquaintances it would be rare for authorities to mistake one for the other. Leitner is a heavyset-Caucasian male and Brightly is a slender-African-American male. Leitner is also 20 years older. After the high exam score, the state became suspicious of Brightly's passing score. Brightly sent Leitner to meet with officials, however the cover-up was unsuccessful. Brightly has pleaded innocent to coercion, falsifying business records and other crimes. He has been taken out of his Baychester classroom pending the outcome of the case. Of the 19,000 teachers across the state that take the certification exam about 95% pass.
