A man died Tuesday after he caught on fire and was tasered by police in the front yard of his Texas home.

Juan Flores Lopez, 47, was holding gasoline in his hand and a lighter. The police report said he poured some gasoline on himself and then threw the container at police, who were not hurt during the incident.

Police said they do not know what ignited the fire, but the Texas Rangers were being investigated over the lighter found in the yard. Lt. Bob Bullock said they are investigating whether tasers are capable of igniting a fire.

Lopez was hospitalized after the confrontation. A hospital spokesperson said he died from injuries caused by the taser and the fire.

Two of Lopez's sons said he had been talking about setting himself and the house on fire since his wife decided to file for divorce. His wife had said she wanted the house after they were legally separated. They added that Lopez has a history of mental illness.
