A small Texas town is worried that a cabinet maker who happens to have two wives and two dozen children will soon be their neighbor.
Samuel Fischer is a member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints -- a denounced offshoot of the Mormon Church. Warren Jeffs, leader of the FCJC, currently awaits trial on charges he married off teenaged brides to older men.
Now Fischer, who said the sect's trust in Utah was taken over by state authorities, wants to move to Lockney, Texas -- a town of 2,000 and possibly give it a much needed economic boost.
Fischer said his cabinet-making business would provide about 100 jobs to the area. He said he settled on living in Lockney after an ice storm left him stranded there. He said he recognized the need for a business like his.
He had already closed on one property in the town and is eyeing several others. Town residents worried that buying several pieces of property meant more FCJC followers would move to the sleepy town.
Resident Ginger Mathis said, "He wouldn't be looking at houses if he didn't have some others coming."
Fischer, aware of the controversy his plans were creating, held a town meeting, which was attended by about 100 people. Some said they felt he lied to them about his plans for the town but others were willing to give him a chance.
Resident Kay Martin said, "I just feel like he's one of God's creatures and if he wants to come to town, that's his business. It doesn't scare me or bother me."
