Thailand's legislature on Wednesday passed a traffic law that bans the use of cell phones without hands-free devices while driving.
The Bangkok Post said the new law will take effect 90 days after publication in the Royal Gazette. The 90-day grace period will allow traffic enforcers to inform the public about the new law.
The Bangkok police bureau has ordered 88 police stations around the capital to conduct a poster and media campaign to inform motorists of the ban.
The law fines violators from $12.66 to $31.77. A committee of the National Legislative Assembly recommended the installation of surveillance cameras to catch violators.
