A woman who works in a thrift store alerted police after she found nearly $7,000 in a belt and the pocket of a coat that had been donated.

Shirley Meagher, who works at the Home Place Thrift Store in Grand Forks, said she sometimes finds strange items among the donations, like the can of soup she found Monday.

On Tuesday she was checking donated items when she found the money. "I guess I was shocked," she said, according to AP.

Meager found the belt first.

"I was sorting through some donations and came across a belt that looked unusual," she said. "It looked awfully thick."

She had heard before that some belts contain zippers to hide money in, so she started inspecting it until she found the zipper. She found a bunch of $100 bills inside.

Then she checked with her boss, who decided to call the police.

Meagher said she started going through other stuff that had been donated with the belt so she could find the owner. She found more money in a coat, bringing the total to close to $7,000.

"I just think the good Lord will put the money where it should go," she said.

Meagher said she never planned on keeping the money.
