More than 50 public toilet cleaners in Singapore are folding their sleeves to take up an intensive 3-day course that will upgrade their status and provide them with extra skills required to clean the city's toilets.

The training is part of a nationwide sanitation campaign that seeks to give the city a facelift.

Once they complete the course, they will be promoted to "restroom specialist." Japanese toilet technology experts will lecture the course attendants on the latest toilet technologies.

A local newspaper wrote, "The plan is to expand the pilot course to a 64-hour one, after which trainees will be certified as 'restroom specialists.'" The article said toilet cleaners currently have low skills and need to upgrade their knowledge about the profession.

The project shall train the city's 5000 toilet cleaners, and raise their status from toilet cleaners to "restroom specialists." They will also have their wages increased from the current 750 Singapore dollars (US$472) to 950 Singapore dollars (US$598). Singapore has launched several campaigns to improve on cleanliness.
