The Marine Reserves Toys for Tots program rejected 4,000 talking Jesus dolls donated by Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co. one2believe division. The company said it was disappointed and surprised by the program's decision.
Bill Grein, vice president of Marine Toys for Tots Foundation, said they could not accept the donation based on the fact that the toys are distributed at random.
He said, "We can't take a chance on sending a talking Jesus doll to a Jewish family or a Muslim family. Kids want a gift for the holiday season that is fun."
But Michael La Roe, director of Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co. said everyone can benefit from hearing the dolls message, which includes scripture quotes such as, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again" and "Love your neighbor as yourself."
He said, "I believe as a churchgoing person, anyone can benefit from hearing the words of the Bible."
