A secret door which led to the hideaway of "canoe man" John Darwin during the years he was "missing" was discovered by the current tenant of the former Darwin residence. The passageway was in a cupboard with a fake wall, which opened to a passageway to a small living space.

Police believe that Darwin would go from the bedroom he shared with wife Anne, and go down the passage into the room, whenever Anne would have visitors.

A Daily Mail report revealed that Darwin also paved a concrete floor to muffle the creakings of the floorboards.

The article furthered, saying that one of the resident's tenants accidentally bumped into Darwin in the stairs.

The neighbor, who immediately recognized Darwin, said "Aren't you supposed to be dead?" Darwin responded to this by saying "Don't tell anyone about this."

John Duffield, the tenant who uncovered the secret passageway, explained "The police asked if there were any passageways between the houses so I looked at the master bedroom. There were gaps as I eased away a piece of shaped hardboard, painted to look like the back of the cupboard."

John Darwin is currently on trial for insurance fraud, as his wife obtained his Ł25,000 life insurance after he "disappeared" and was proclaimed dead.

The BBC furthered that he is also charged with making false statements for a passport. He was arrested on Tuesday at Basingstoke, in his son's house.

Anne Darwin was also arrested last Sunday on suspicion of fraud.

The couple's two sons, obviously upset about their parents' scam, recently released a statement declaring that they did not want contact with their parents at this time.
