Prisoners Taught Deep-Water Diving

A California men's prison hopes to keep inmates from returning to crime by training them for undersea construction and dam. The marine technology training program is taught to prisoners serving 14 months to 4 years sentences. Ironically, the California Institution for Men is landlocked and located on a stretch of former farmland some 40 miles east of Los Angeles.

Beetles Could Hold Secret to Underwater Travel

Artificial gills that would allow humans to breathe underwater may be in the works. Scientists are studying how beetles stay alive while being submerged underwater. Scientists in England studied water-repellent surfaces and found that they have tiny structures that stick out and the water droplets collect on them.

Poker Players Compete 15,000 Off The Ground

As part of InterPoker. com's Extreme Poker series novice players and one professional battled it out 15,000-ft. off the ground. Losers of the game would have to parachute themselves out of an airplane. The players are the winners of Extreme Poker's online tournaments to play Texas Hold 'em in weird settings. The first of the series was played underwater and the second was played on a polar ice cap in Finland.

Dad Breathes Air Into Son Trapped Underwater For 7 Minutes

Orlando, FL (AHN)-A 14-year-old who was sucked to the bottom of a hotel hot tub and kept under water for at least seven minutes was likely saved by air his father breathed into his mouth during the ordeal. After a grate at the bottom of the tub apparently broke, Aljuwon Pipkin, who was visiting Walt Disney World from New Jersey, became stuck at the bottom of the hot tub last Thursday at the Radisson Parkway Hotel.

"Elvis" Performs Underwater

The Underwater Music Festival had a brush with the King of Rock and Roll when an Elvis impersonator was among the snorkelers and divers who swam Looe Key Reef. Neil Goldberg, of Key West, dressed in a white-caped jumpsuit and flashy gold chains, joined several hundred visitors and residents who took the plunge for the six-hour weekend radio broadcast. "We even had a Chihuahua in goggles and a swim vest on one of the dive boats," festival founder Bill Becker told the Associated Press.
