Vietnam's government against "social evils" has evidently targeted Karaoke bars since they will no longer be allowed to sell or have alcohol on their premises.
Under the new legislation that went into effect Thursday, karaoke bars, along with discotheques, are legally bound to close at midnight.
Le Anh Tuyen, director of the Legal Department at the Ministry of Culture and Information says, "The decree will definitely help reduce negative activities in karaoke bars and discotheques."
According to government officials karaoke establishments and discos frequently facilitate prostitution and drug usage.
Tuyen says, Karaoke came to Vietnam in the late 1980s and ballooned popularity in the late 1990s, with more than 10,000 establishments licensed to operate in the country.
