Almost 62 years after he lost his wallet in France during World War II, Ray Heilwagen received a call from a man in Illinois who couriered it back to him.
Recalling the phone call from Stephen Breitenstein of Palatine, Ill, Heilwagen told the Hannibal Courier-Post, "He said, 'Did you lose a billfold?' and I remembered I did.'
"Then he said, 'I found it and will send it to you,' Heilwagen added.
Breitenstein searched through his father's possessions after his death and found the wallet in a drawer that belonged to Stephen Breitenstein. Breitenstein's father too served in France during World War II. He apparently found it during the war and brought it home.
Breitenstein searched for the wallet's owner Heilwagen through Internet and mailed it to him after their phone conversation.
"He sent it to me, and I received it in very good order," Heilwagen said. "It had everything in it - (French) francs and pictures and my original Social Security card and some receipts."
