The Sunday night fire that hit a shopping mall in the shopping district of Baclaran is still burning. Firefighters found it difficult to battle the two-day fire due to the absence of windows and doors, textiles stored in the mall and lack of water and equipment.

It will be a hot summer in this Chicago neighbor this year, not only because of the rising temperature but a ban on window-mounted air conditioner units. The prohibition is the result of an ordinance approved by the village board in March. It specifically banned the installation of window-mounted air coolers on walls that face the street or in side windows 12 feet or less from the street.

Albert Hofmann, the inventor of the mind-altering drug LSD, died Tuesday at the age of 102. Hofmann was a Swiss chemist who discovered lysergic acid diethylamide-25 by accident in 1938 while studying the medicinal ingredients in plants. One April day in 1938 a bit of LSD seeped onto his finger. That's when he discovered the psychedelic effects of the drug.

Authorities reported that an intoxicated man exploded in an angry rage at a local gas station. The man, 20-year old Tyler Kraft from Timber Lake, South Dakota, allegedly came up to the Conoco gas station carrying a yellow shovel, approached two men and threatened them with his weapon.

Jerry Morgan noticed that the front windows of his neighbor's house in Parker City was shattered, and was shocked to see blood all over the walls. Thinking that a murder had occurred, Morgan phoned the local authorities for assistance.
