In the ongoing list of strange auctions, the Wisconsin forest department is selling off a 100-foot fire lookout tower; opening the bidding up at just $1. The only catch is the state wants the tower moved off its land before it's put to any other use.
According to full-time forest specialist and part-time tower salesman Gary Vander Wyst of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, taking the tower apart shouldn't be too much of a problem, "It goes pretty quick. It's like taking apart a set of Tinkertoys."
The fire-lookout tower was reportedly erected in the mid 1930's about seven miles west of Park Falls. It was among an array of 200 towers once used to keep an eye on the vast forests to the north.
However, with the department moving to a modern fleet of airplanes to efficiently patrol the forest, the classic tower has lost its purpose.
According to the Associated Press, bidding opens at 11 a.m. on February 23 at the Park Falls Ranger Station. Eager bidders can submit their offer to: Gary Vander Wyst, Wisconsin DNR, 875 4th Ave. South, Park Falls, WI 54552.
