A 36-year-old man from Howards Grove, Wisconsin had his best catch ever - a 6-foot-long fish, while skimming off ice near his home. Darren Horness had to apply all his force to get the fish out, which was as tall as he is.
Horness says he had to cut a hole through the 16 inches of ice on Lake Winnebago to take out the giant 102-pound, 72-inch sturgeon. "The fish was actually coming up into the hole, I just could see part of it and could tell it was a kind of a nice fish, but I had no idea how big it really was," Horness told AP.
Horness says he has to get down on his knees and spear almost horizontal to take the fish out. "I didn't know how good of a hit that I had on it because it was such a weird throw," he added.
Sturgeon is a term for a genus of fish of which twenty-one species are known. It is one of the oldest genera of fish in existence and is native to European, Asian, and North American waters. Sturgeons ranging from 8 to 11 feet (2.5 to 3.5 m) in length are by no means scarce, and some species grow to a much larger size.
