London, UK (AHN)-A British court awards compensation to a woman who claimed her bullying mother-in-law made her life miserable.

Nottingham County Court ruled Dalbir Kaur Bhakar should pay off $65,000 to her daughter-in-law, Gina Satvir Singh.

Singh, 26, reported months of abuse after her arranged marriage to Bhakar's son Hardeep Bhakar in November 2002.

Singh claimed that Bhakar, who also lived with them, made her captive and required her to wake up at 6:30 a.m. to do "excessive and unnecessary" household chores.

She also said she was averted from going to a Sikh temple, limited to visit family and monitored during her telephone calls among other reported abuses.

She separated from her husband in 2003 and filed against Bhakar under the Protection from Harassment Act.

Bhakar denied the accusations .

Singh's lawyer, John Rosley, said told reporters that she was "a very brave young woman, who is now rebuilding her life." He said, "There must be many women who could bring such a case but do not."
