On Wednesday, a 25-year-old punk rock singer dies after jumping from a limousine into early morning San Diego Freeway traffic and striking at least 12 cars.
According to police, the incident occured around 5 a.m. and caused a massive traffic jam in Costa Mesa, shutting down southbound lanes and clogging streets as commuters searched for alternate routes. Lanes were reopened by 11 a.m.
Officials say they are unclear what pushed Jessica Rowe, a mother of two, to jump from the Hummer limousine.
Rowe was traveling in the vehicle with other band members and friends in the 17-foot-long, 20-passenger limo. The driver tells police the vehicle was traveling at about 65 MPH.
Tommy Wetzel, owner of Exotic Limousines Inc., says the group of six was socializing Tuesday night at the Standard Hotel in downtown L.A. He says the driver of the limo had told him Rowe and her boyfriend had argued at the hotel.
Later, the driver says he took the group to a residence in Costa Mesa, where they continued partying. After a few hours, the group left for Rowe's home; on the way there, she jumped from the vehicle.
Rowe sat in the open window of the Hummer before jumping. Passengers tell police she hit at least 12 cars and died at the scene. Her death is being investigated as a suicide.
