A women who gave birth to her grandchild may have found a way to side-step the Japanese government.
A Japanese women in her 50s acted as a surrogate for her daughter and her son-in-law. Her daughter had her uterus removed because of cancer and was unable to have children. This marks the first time a woman has been a surrogate for her daughter in Japan.
The Japanese government does not support surrogacy and views the woman who gave birth the mother instead of the biological. In fact, one celebrity couple is currently in court trying to register her twins born to a surrogate as her own.
The mother daughter pair however, registered the child as the grandmothers when it was born and the mother and son-in-law later adopted the child. Both the child and the surrogate are reportedly doing well.
