A woman jumped into the polar bear cage at the Berlin Zoo Friday morning and survived an attack by one of the bears.
Zookeepers were feeding the animals, one of which bit the intruder on her arms and legs, but zoo staff managed to stave off the bear. The woman is recovering at the Virchow hospital in Berlin, a Russian news service, Novosti reported.
Police are still investigating the cause of the incident, but suspect the woman may be mentally ill since she willingly jumped into the cage.
This is not the zoo's first human/polar bear incident. Last December a man who said he was "lonely" jumped into the cage of the zoo's most famous polar bear, but he came away with no injuries after the zookeepers distracted the bear, Knut, with beef, Novosti reported.
