A woman died after jumping from the rooftop of a department store in Tokyo. A passer-by was knocked unconscious after breaking the woman's fall, authorities said Tuesday.
Local Police Spokesman Tetsuhiko Kanehara said they responded immediately to the scene after phone-calls from other passers-by, finding the man and woman collapsed and bleeding on the street infront of the Ikebukuro Parco Department Store in Tokyo's Toshima-ku at around 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
The woman, who committed the suicide and thought to be a 25-year-old Tokyo resident with no occupation, was declared dead on arrival.
Meanwhile, the man, believed to be a 37-year-old resident of Chiba Prefecture, stays insentient.
Ikebukuro Police Station officials stated the woman's shoes were discovered on the roof of the said establishment, leading them to suspect that she had leaped to her death and landed on the man. According to reports it is usual in Japan for people to remove their shoes before committing suicide.
Security camera recording showed the woman approaching the restricted area of the department store, which made the police to conclude that she broke a lock to enter the 8th floor rooftop and then climbed over a 10-foot high steel fence before deciding to leap.
Japan is considered as one of the developed world's highest suicide rates, with a record of more than 32,000 people committing such crime in 2006.
