Azza Basarudin, 30, says she ordered a Quran through Amazon.com and received it with religious slurs written inside and the phrase; "Death to all Muslims" inked in thick, black marker on its first page.
On Wednesday, Basarudin asked for an apology and full investigation by the online retailer.
Patty Smith, spokeswoman for Amazon said the book was purchased directly from Bellwether Books through the "Marketplace" section of the site.
"This was not our inventory, it was nowhere in our order or fulfillment process," she said. "It was a used book purchased through a third party."
The owner of Bellwether Books, a small resale company in McKeesport, PA., says he doubts any of his six employees were responsible for defacing the book, which received a check over before being shipped, but he doubts the pages inside were checked.
According to the AP, Bellwether has since been banned from selling Qurans through Amazon.com. Bellwether apologized to Basarudin through email and offered to replace the book.
Amazon.com also apologized, reimbursing her for the book and offering her a gift certificate.
Salam Al-Marayati, executive director of the Muslim Public Affairs Council, said his organization wants a public apology and investigation from Amazon.com, as well as the firing of those responsible for mailing the desecrated book.
