One woman is lucky to have escaped injury after a piece of an airplane crashed into the roof of a home near Midway Airport in Chicago, Illinois.
A 12-inch disc from an engine turbine wheel fell only 2 feet from Dorothy Gohn's bed, while she was laying there sleeping. Authorities from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) say Gohn wasn't injured in the accident.
Gohn says, "I went to pick it up and it was really hot. You couldn't touch it. So I left it and when I finally picked it up, it had burned through my carpet, all the way to the floor."
Tony Molinaro, an FAA spokesman says the engine piece was traced back to a Mitsubishi MU-2B-36 cargo plane which landed at Midway, without any indication of mechanical problems.
What may be more disturbing is that according to Aircraft Maintenance Technology (AMT) online, the pilot did not report the engine failure to authorities, Molinaro said. Instead, FAA inspectors found the plane themselves, with significant engine damage and some wing damage, in a hangar at Midway Airport.
The flight, registered to American Check Transport, came in from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
