A 28-year-old environmentalist from Machynllet, Powys in England, is planning on traveling some 9,770 miles by land to be a bridesmaid at a wedding in Australia because she does not want to contribute to air pollution by flying.

Barbara Haddrill said the trip would take her six weeks to accomplish at a cost of $3,800.

She told the Mirror, "I could never fly, it wouldn't be right. It's a challenge going overland. But it's worth it knowing I'm not harming the planet. I just hope I get to the church on time."

The woman, who lives in a caravan in a forest and works on alternative technology, estimates traveling by land would produce only 1.4 tons of carbon dioxide instead of 5.2 tons if she flew.

She plans to travel 1,560 miles by bus to Moscow, Russia. From there, she rides the Trans-Siberian railway 3,600 miles to Beijing,China where she gets on a train for Singapore 2,770 miles away. Once there she boards a boat for final destination Brisbane,Australia 3,840 miles away.

However, she has not yet made any plans on her trip back. But she said, "Definitely no planes. I'll find a different route."
