A New York City woman is organizing a 30th birthday party on July 7, 2006, at which she will take off a dress she has worn every day for the past year.
Dancer, choreographer and party planner Alex Martin first put on a homemade brown dress on July 7, 2005. At the launch of her project, she wrote in her blog she would "through snowballs in it (wearing additional clothing layers in cold weather for health & safety), garden in it, rehearse in it, travel in it, dance in it, cook in it, prune my pear trees in it, drink wine in it, sing my baby to sleep in it."
In September of 2005, Martin wrote in an artist's statement that her project was, "one small, personal attempt to confront consumerism by refusing to change my dress for 365 days."
Martin wrote the project shows her intent "to reject our sweat-shop-supporting economy of overconsumption, and the bill of goods that has been sold, especially to women, about what makes a person good, attractive and interesting."
Matin said she washed and mended the dress and took it off at night before she went to bed. She will take it off "once and for all" at her "un-dressing" party in New York City. The party, held in a warehouse space, will include performances by Martin and others and is open to the public. There is free admission, but donations are accepted.
