A jury has decided to go easy on the 36-year-old woman who mailed a parking ticket to police in an envelope that contained a powdery substance along with a note saying "I hope you get the flu" with a smiley face on it.

April Bedell of Strafford has been spared of jail time and was instead sentenced Wednesday to 100 hours of community service. She was convicted last November of creating a false public alarm, a felony, over the note and the powder that spilled onto a Rochester parking enforcement officer.

According to AP reports, further investigation revealed that the powder was not dangerous but a muffin mix, which Bedell accidentally got into the envelope while paying bills in her kitchen.

Bedell also testified she decided to write it after she sneezed on the ticket and $15 check.

A Strafford County Superior Court judge also sentenced Bedell to two years of probation, a $1,000 fine and a tour of the local jail. Her "joke" shut down the police station for many hours and created a panic for the people working there who had to be checked for any health problems.
