A 90-year-old private women's club is so desperate for money and new membership that they've decided to let in a man.
The Daytona Woman's Club had a membership of over 1,400 in the 1950s, but, due to aging of its members and lifestyle changes, now has only 307 members. According to club president Barbara Markham, the average age among members is 70.
"Right now we are concentrating all our effort on keeping out head above water and trying to keep our doors open," says Markham.
It would require about $1 million to keep the club open for the next five years, Markham says.
The money would be put to use maintaining the club's 1840s-era meeting house and funding other expenses.
Other men may be asked to join the club in the future.
