Iran has woven the world's largest carpet which is the size of a soccer field, the AFP reported on Tuesday.

The AFP reported that the wool carpet measures 5,626 square meters (60,546 square feet). The United Arab Emirates ordered it for $5.8 million to be used in a mosque in its capital Abu Dhabi named after UAE founder and president Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahayan.

The carpet actually consists of nine pieces that will be stitched together in UAE before being placed in the praying area of the massive mosque.

It took 1,200 weavers and 18 months to finish the carpet made from 38 tons of wool and cotton. The weavers were from three villages near the town of Neishabbor in Iran's northeastern province of Khorasan.

The carpet, which has 2.2 billion knots and 25 colors, was designed by Iranian artist Ali Khaliqi. The design is a traditional pattern of flowers, leaves, branches and plants.

Previously, Iranian weavers in Isfahan province made a 5,000-sqaure-meter carpet.
