The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) will switch on the world's largest particle accelerator on Wednesday by circulating the first proton beams around its 17-mile circular underground tunnel near here.
The firing of two proton beams at the Large Hadron Collider in the French-Swiss border is scheduled at 7:30 GMT. More beam circulation tests will be conducted until CERN scientists perfect the process before the actual collision of two proton beams next month.
By firing two separate proton beams in opposite direction and colliding them, the LHC will simulate the condition of the Big Bang theory to learn the evolution of the universe. Physicists will also analyze materials generated by the collision in finding answers about the existence of extra dimensions and dark matter as well as why matter has mass.
