Chanel, a dachshund, celebrated her 21st birthday with a party complete with cake Wednesday.

Her owners, Denice and Karl Shaugnessey, took her to Manhattan's Dog Hotel and Spa for the milestone birthday party, where they were presented with a certificate from a Guinness World Records official confirming Chanel's rank as oldest dog, England's The Daily Telegraph reported.

At 21, Chanel's age puts her at the human equivalent of 147 years old. She can't walk very far, and she wears special doggy goggles to protect her cataracts.

"She's independent," owner Denice Shaugnessey told the New York Post. "If she didn't want to do something, she had a look she would give, and she usually got her way."

Chanel's red hair has now faded to white, and she eats a special diet, but she's happy to spend her days relaxing at home, only taking walks in the summer.

"She used to run three miles with me every day," Shaughnessy, who adopted Chanel from a Virginia shelter as a 6-week-old pup, told the Post. "She still enjoys a walk, but now she's carried for a lot of it."

Chanel became the oldest dog last spring when a 28-year-old beagle from Virginia died.
