Zimbabwe's central bank governor is asking for limits and controls on the price of beer. He said cheap lager was responsible for turning the country into a nation of drunkards.
In June the price of beer and other commodities were cut by the government in an attempt at at staving off inflation. Current estimates now have levels at 6,500 percent. Reports out of the country say that a pint of lager is now only available in hotels and is cheaper to buy than a bottled of mineral water.
Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor Gideon Gono feels the reduced cost of beer was adversely affecting the very fabric of his nation's people. He also says the low price is also depriving the country of much needed tax revenue.
During an address Gono said, 'We are creating a nation of drunkards because beer is so cheap." The crowd which contained army service chiefs and government ministers erupted into laughter.
"By doing what we did to beer, we are causing disharmony in families because husbands are coming home drunk every day." In some instances, decision makers at various levels (who are under the influence of the cheap beer) are making tragic decisions, he said.
