Donating your organs is a great idea. However, you probably don’t want to become an early organ donor, particularly not from doing something stupid. Here are five ways you can reduce your risk of dying early.

Avoid Motorcycles

Many people love riding on motorcycles. Motorcycles offer a fun way to get from one place to another, because you’re free and open to the wind and the elements. It can be invigorating. It can also be deadly. That freedom can end up killing you if you get hit by a distracted driver. If you absolutely must ride a motorcycle, be extra cautious and follow all the laws, paying attention to other drivers so they don’t cause you injury or death. Wear a helmet too. Just remember that safe riding won’t always make up for the stupidity of others, so you could still get hurt.

Observe the Speed Limit

Speed limits vary from one place to the next. Pay attention to the posted speed limit no matter where you’re driving. The faster you drive, the easier it is to lose control of your car and get into an accident. But remember that driving too slowly can also be hazardous, particularly if you’re not careful about where you do it. The drivers of the car behind you may get frustrated with your speed and that could cause both of you to get into an accident. The safest speed to go is the speed of the traffic, as long as the traffic isn’t speeding heavily.

Don’t Drink and Drive

Drinking and driving is not only illegal, it’s also dangerous. And stupid. When you get behind the wheel, you need to be in total control of all of your faculties. Alcohol consumption impairs your judgment and makes it harder to follow the rule of the road. You can avoid that by only drinking when you don’t have to drive later. If you discover you have to drive after you’ve already been drinking, don’t get behind the wheel. Call an Uber, a Lyft or a taxi. Have someone else take you home.

Exercise Daily

Regular exercise has been shown to help increase blood flow to all areas of the body. Increased blood flow helps the heart get into better shape. It also helps people avoid medical conditions like a stroke, diabetes or dementia. A serious stroke could serious limit your ability to move and could even kill you. Look for exercises you enjoy. Try out swimming, ride a bike, or just walk through a nearby park. Any exercise is better than no exercise.

Get Enough Sleep

Sleep is one of the best ways to avoid illness and early death. It’s amazing how few people get enough of it. When was the last time you heard the phrase “sleep is for the weak”? Maybe you were even the one who said it. Did you know that sleep deprivation can cause extreme fatigue, depression, memory loss, sickness, weight gain, irritability, diabetes, anxiety, and more? The next time you want to pull an all-nighter to finish playing your favorite video game or because you’re having a fun night out with your friends, think about the toll your lack of sleep is having on your body. And then call it a night.

While organ donation is a wonderful idea that can help many people, don’t become an organ donor unwittingly. Use your brain while it’s still in your head, and you’ll survive much longer.
