Long back in 2008 when I was still dabbling with the world of coding, I was invited to the wedding of one of my friends. As a habitual smoker, I lit a cigarette at the wedding venue and drank pomegranate juice. The deadly combination did me in and I found myself dropping onto the floor. When rushed to the hospital, the neurosurgeon diagnosed it as a panic attack occurring due to depression. All hell broke loose after the check up and I decided to bid good bye to software developer career and ventured into the writing world.

My Tryst With Depression

Finding The Solution:

My decision was ad hoc because the problem returned with a vengeance during the writing of articles and blogs. Personally, I do not regard depression as a disease in spite of knowing that doctors have whole arsenal of medicines against it. People may not agree with me but writing helped me to release the frustration and escape from the panic attack. When the doctors advised me to have counseling from a psychiatrist, my inner self resisted but later on I realized that a genuine problem existed related to mental health.

Writers suffering from the wallows of depression should confront the problem rather than escaping from it. Mental therapy played a very important role in keeping me calm and balanced. If depression is left untreated, it can cause havoc with the quality of writing. Finding the solution to the problem is important rather than hiding and letting it snowball into a major issue.

Avoid Mood Swings:

A writer has to be balanced while writing because extreme mood swings can clutter the thought process. If you are feeling low, the quality might reflect in the content. Writing immediately after rejection of the article might create more problems in the long run. Take a deep breath after a bad experience and do not get bogged down by failures. Let the emotions subside before attempting to write again.

Strike Balance Between Professional And Personal Life:

Excessive work load can take a huge toll on the lives of the writers even if they are working from home. Do not let the work get better of your life or else it may result in onset of depression. Getting up early and doing light exercise are important to enhance the body metabolism. An active body helps to keep the balance of chemicals in brain. In order to prevent depression from setting in, make new friends, venture out of the comfort zone and spend time with family members. They are the best activities that would help you to get rejuvenated from the daily mundane routine.

Do Not Wallow Into Self Pity:

Depression is not a permanent state but it can be cured with the help of psychotherapists and family. People generally feel that all writers are pessimistic but on the contrary. I never felt the same way. I never write while feeling low because it impacts the quality and makes me sink into a cesspool of depression. My pen becomes active only when I feel happy and grounded.
