PETA has announced their results for the 2009 Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities Alive poll. Country star Kellie Pickler and "Heroes" hottie Milo Ventimiglia have won the top honors for the U. S. poll. For the international poll for women, Portia De Rossi won the award. De Rossi discussed her choice to become a vegan along with wife Ellen DeGeneres, telling PETA, "It feels like such a compassionate choice. We are such animal lovers, why stop short of cows and chickens? It didn't make much sense. "

A cow escaped from a New York City slaughterhouse Wednesday, leading police on a 10-block chase. The cow will not be returned for slaughter. Molly, the cow's nickname, is believed to be less than a year old, the UPI reported.

Fifty-two cows on a ranch in northern Uruguay died after they were struck by the same bolt of lightning. A veterinarian who examined the line of dead Hereford and Normandy cows in San Jose State said the animals were electrocuted because they were all pressed against the ranch's wired fence that was hit by lightning on Wednesday.

An animal rights group has urged a U. S. ice cream maker to follow a Swiss restaurant's lead by using human breast milk instead of cow's milk in making its products. The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) made the call in a letter to the owners of Vermont-based Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc. on Tuesday.

Sustainable lawn mowing is making a come back in tight economic times. City officials in Turin, Italy expect to save about $48,000 this year by using a herd of sheep to trim municipal lawns instead of having gardeners mow the lawns. It's not a new idea; sheep were originally used to keep parks mowed when Europeans invented country parks in the 18th Century.
