A 49-year-old man from Boston, Mass. pleaded guilty Wednesday in U.S. District Court to collecting thousands of dollars of false insurance money after he and his wife intentionally ate glass in various restaurants.
According to prosecutors, Ronald Evano was supported by his wife, Mary Evano to file fraudulent insurance claims worth more than $200,000. He pleaded guilty to 20 counts of conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud, identity theft, making false statements on health care matters and Social Security fraud.
An arrest warrant was issued for Mary Evano in 2006 on the same charges as her husband. Mary is still at large.
In the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped four counts of identity fraud and healthcare fraud against her husband.
Associated Press quotes Assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Pirozzolo as saying that the couple were treated at hospitals for glass ingestions several times for which they even collected payments from insurance companies but never paid their hospital bills.
Evano admitted in court to eating glass for the need of money. Currently being held at Norfolk County Jail, he faces up to 100 years in prison and will be sentenced next month.
