A housewife was convicted of attempted murder after she tried to kill her husband by mixing antifreeze into their wedding anniversary dinner.
The court of Stafford Crown found Kate Knight, 28, guilty of attempted murder after she laced her husband's curry and red wine with antifreeze back in 2005. Lee's ingestion of the tainted food and drink caused him to suffer from brain damage, and irreversible kidney failure.
Knight decided to kill her husband to pay for the debts she accumulated without informing him. The prosecutor said she was attempting to use the money to be handed to her from her husband's employer, due to Lee's death.
A Ł250,000 insurance was also anticipated by Kate upon planning her husband's demise, according to the Times Online.
She reportedly did online research for tips to kill her husband, coming across option such as overdosing on Ecstasy or iron tablets. She eventually opted for the antifreeze.
Neighbor Sarah Johnson said that Knight was completely open about her plans.
"She said she was going to poison his curry that she was cooking that night," Johnson recalled, quoted CNN. "She had done it the previous night and he had complained about the tinny taste in his mouth."
A police investigation resulted in the discovery of antifreeze in Knight's home, and certain documents that showed her financial troubles.
Describing Lee Knight, prosecutor William Davis said that "he is still deaf and blind and his kidneys are damaged irreparably...He could well have died."
Knight, however, said that her husband's terrible health conditions were caused by his constant drinking, as he had a penchant for drinking at least four liters of super strength lager, among others, each day.
Other expert witnesses agreed with Knight's argument, saying that the physical conditions of Lee Knight were unlikely caused by the antifreeze.
Lee described his wife's actions as having ruined his life.
