Winter can be wonderful, but it can also reak absolute havoc on your skin. That fresh-faced dewy look that seemed to come almost effortlessly in the summer has now been replaced by a decidedly more dull, listless visage. What’s a gal to do?

Before you drop your hard earned cash on a plane ticket to Bali, keep reading. Winter is not a death sentence for your radiant skin. There’s a lot you can do to keep your look glowing all year round.

  1. Hydrate!

Just because you’re not sweating buckets in the heat doesn’t mean you don’t need to keep hydrated. The cells in your skin, like in the rest of your body, rely on water to keep them nourished and healthy. When you’re dehydrated, it shows in dry, dull skin. So bottoms up! Drink at least 2L of water every day. Not tea. Not coffee. Not pop or juice or smoothies. Only water counts as water. Drink it!

  1. Eat Whole Foods

Granted, fresh produce from your farmer’s market doesn’t abound in the winter, but thanks to the advent of grocery stores, there’s no excuse not to eat fresh, whole foods as much as possible. Fruits, vegetables, lean cuts of meat, legumes and whole grains: these are the foods that will nourish your skin from the inside out. Free from preservatives and artificial colours and flavours, whole food bogs down your system less and helps you glow more.

  1. Use Sunscreen

All that cloud cover and the distinct lack of heat doesn’t mean the sun’s rays aren’t still pounding down on your precious epidermis. Protect it from potentially fatal and undeniably destructive UV rays and layer on the sunscreen. Every. Single. Day. You don’t even have to put another step in your skincare regime to do this: simply invest in a CC cream or BB cream with a built-in SPF. Less sun damaged skin is healthier, younger looking skin. Savvy?

  1. Moisturise

Colder, dryer air means you need to be diligent about moisturising. Ensure you use a day cream, night cream and separate cream that’s been specially designed for the delicate skin around your eyes. Need

Moisture BONUS pro tip: Use toner right before you moisturise to restore your skin’s pH and prep your skin for optimal uptake of your moisturiser.

  1. Lip Love

Finally, don’t forget about your poot, chapped lips. The skin on your lips is a different sort of skin. One without melanin (a pigment that makes you tan). One without hair. One without pores or sweat glands. It needs our protection! Use a good quality lip balm made from natural ingredients (cause let’s face it — you’re going to invest at least a little) and use it as needed. You have the information, so no excuses! Take care of your skin this winter and enjoy year-round radiance.
