The toilet isn’t something a lot of people are comfortable talking about, but when you think about it, it is one of the more important appliances in your home. Several appliances have an important job to do and would be missed if they stopped working or malfunctioned, but the toilet is on an entirely different level.

As long as it is working properly, you might not give it much thought, but the time will come when it needs replacing and it’s better to be ahead of the game than to wait for an embarrassing mishap.  Here are some of the qualities of a “good” toilet for you to consider when shopping for that new addition to your bathroom.

Water Usage

The amount of water your toilet uses with each flush is an important factor because it directly affects your monthly water bill. Now, you can’t just go out and get a toilet that uses any old amount of water. There are laws to consider and you won’t even be able to find a toilet that uses more than a specified amount. Either way, keep an eye on it and ask ahead of time so you know that your water usage will be where you expected every month.

Flushing Function

The flushing function of your toilet is also a big factor when looking at good toilet qualities.  It’s great if your toilet is equipped to save you money and help the environment, but if it doesn’t work like it’s supposed to, you’re going to have yourself some problems.

In the early days of low flow toilets, they were efficient when it came to saving water per flush, but inefficient when it came to emptying the contents of the bowl in that same flush. And as unappealing as that sounds, it is also counterintuitive because more than one flush was often needed to do the work of one, high water flush.

Today, there are newer models and newer technologies that will save the water without sacrificing the function. This is the type of toilet to look for when you are shopping for a new one.

Cost and Comfort

While it isn’t necessary to choose the highest priced toilet models out there, you really shouldn’t be too tight-fisted, either. Think about what it is used for and how often it is used, and choose a model that is somewhere in the upper ranges of your budget.

Obviously, you can’t try it out while you’re in the store but you can get an idea or a gauge of how comfortable it will be. Check out the height and the shape and material of the seat and choose one that seems like it will be comfortable over the long-term.

At the end of the day, the best “quality” of a good toilet is quality. With an appliance like this, the less you have to think about it or fiddle with it, and the lesser the number of plumbing services, the better. Just get it installed and let it do its job flawlessly for years to come, and all will be right with the world.
